Shock at Aintree as Eurotrek takes the Becher Handicap Chase
The 25/1 shot Eurotrek, ridden by Liam Heard, won the Becher Handicap Chase over the Grand National fences at Aintree today.
The outsider stayed with long-time leader Bewleys Berry with three to jump, and despite a mistake at the last, eased home in style.
Bewleys Berry rallied gamely for second place, eight lengths behind the winner, with Dunbrody Millar third.
Nil Desperandum (8-1) was fourth but course specialist Clan Royal got no further than the first under AP McCoy.
Eurotrek's trainer Paul Nicholls said
"We almost didn't run him. It was a last-minute decision really and we thought he might need the run, although I must say that beforehand I didn't think I'd ever seen him look better."
At one point it looked like the 10-year-old winner was in trouble when veering alarmingly to his left with one to go.
But Heard had sufficient time to realign his course and gallop up the Elbow and ease home.
